Ecolunch Seminar: Dr. Sumayah Rahman, Director of Data Science at Cedar
Tuesday, January 30, 2024, 11:30am - 12:30pm
Dr. Sumayah Rahman, invited by Bahar Talebzadeh Kasgar, will be joining us and presenting her talk "Ecology of antibiotic resistance in the infant gut microbiome". Dr. Rahman received her PhD degree at UC Berkeley in 2019, and currently serves as the Director of Data Science at Cedar. Below is a brief introduction to Dr. Rahman's talk:
Genome-resolved metagenomics, the process of reconstructing genomes from environmental sequence data, allows unique insight into microbial systems. We applied this technique to investigate how the antibiotic resistance genes of bacteria affect their ability to flourish in the gut under various conditions. We found that strain-level selection in formula-fed infants drives enrichment of beta-lactamase genes in the gut resistome. Using genomes from metagenomes, we built a machine learning model to predict how organisms in the gut microbial community respond to perturbation by antibiotics, which may have medical applications.
Location: GDC 2.210
